Some Rare Examples of Gilt Leather Antependia (Altar Frontals)

Today I am pleased to share some examples of antependia which have been crafted out of coloured and gilt leather. These particular examples have been produced by the company Lutson Goudleder, a company which has been producing decorative gilt leather products for the past thirty-six years. Most of their work ends up within secular contexts, but occasionally they are asked to produce antependia and even reliquaries. While not common, gilt leather antependia were found in parts of Europe in the seventeeth and eighteenth centuries -- though admittedly, this is the first time I have ever come across such, but of course, we find antependia made from all sorts of materials historically, most commonly silks of course, but also metal and even painted wood.

Each of these examples were provided to LAJ by Lutson Goudleder itself for which we are very appreciative and grateful. These works and their corresponding history demonstrate the historical creativity that has been employed by the faithful over the centuries at the service of the beautification of the sacred liturgy.

The following video provides a little 'behind the scenes' insight into how this artistic process is accomplished.
