Many years ago, we wrote an article on the beauty of the combination of gold vestments with silver vestments, and recently we also shared some information on the similar beauty of cloth of silver vestments. Well as part of researching the latter article, I came across a number of historical examples of another very elegant combination that has caught my attention over the years: that of rose vestments with silver accents. This can take various forms, from rose damasks that have had silver design interwoven right into the fabric, to rose vestments which use silver galloons or embroidery. Whatever the case, the pairing is one that I have always found particularly appealing, in part because of the complementarity of the colours and in part because the use of silver instead of gold always has struck me as somewhat more in concert with use in a penitential season (though I would hasten to note this is an entirely subjective and aribtrary view on my part). The main point, however, is the beauty and complementarity of this particular colour combination, and today I simply wishes to present a series of vestments that utilize this combination in the hopes of both whetting your own appetite for it, and also to hopefully inspire those who are in the business of designing or commissioning vestments.
All of the vestments here are likely of eighteenth century vintage. Enjoy!
