Vestments Commissioned by Bishop David van Bourgondië

The following vestment set dates from the early 1500's and was commissioned by Bishop David of Burgundy. Sadly, for him, the set was not completed prior to his own death -- which is perhaps a pertinent reminder for our own, rather impatient age that vestments of this sort of quality took a great deal of time to execute.

The set constituted all the parts necessary for a Solemn Mass, including cope, chasuble, dalmatic and tunicle. You can see a detail of the hood of the cope above, which shows off the exquisite embroidery. Here, for your enjoyment, are some images of the rest of the set.

Not shown in the image above, the dalmatic and tunicle also include a very nice pair of larger green tassels. Here they are seen here:

Finally, here is the chasuble itself, shown from the back:

One of the points I like to note in vestments of this period is to highlight the highly ornamental quality of the textile that was used. Very often moderns consider such textiles to be later, baroque developments, but nothing could be further from the truth.

This set now finds its home within the Catherijne Convent Museum in Utrecht.
