While the consideration of liturgical textiles tends to be primarily focused on vestments and antependia, one of the less widely seen instantiations is the processional banner. Processional banners are, of course, used within processions, carried as devotional objects, often providing extra solemnity to these occasions and imbuing such ceremonies with a focus on particular saints, events or other elements of devotion.
Beyond this however, and perhaps lesser known even still, are the "memento mori" funerary banners -- which I suspect were utilized in funeral processions, All Souls Day, and potentially times such as Good Friday -- since a number of them also include crucifixion scenes as well.
Almost all of the examples I wish to show you today come from Italy in the 19th and 20th century. Let's dive right in.
